Organizations preparing for litigation have several options for handling eDiscovery support. They can use their in-house legal department resources, use outside counsel/law firm resources, use legal contract staffing agencies, or use an external legal managed service provider, including an alternative legal service provider (ALSP). The decision about which solution to use often comes down to an organization’s timeline and resource allocation goals. Integrating legal managed services for eDiscovery offers an attractive alternative, particularly for corporate legal departments that simply do not have the resources to handle the volume and timelines needed.
Companies and law firms may benefit from this strategy in several ways:
- Efficiency. When eDiscovery and managed services are integrated, there is no need for the business to allocate resources to handle the large scaling of resources needed in this phase of litigation. These efficiencies are even more apparent for organizations that handle repetitive litigation involving the same clients or data sources. Managed services providers address the infrastructure fluxuations within their own organizations, leading to greater process efficiencies and more reliable outcomes.
- Cost-effectiveness. Using legal managed services offers cost efficiencies by offering organizations the benefits of secure, accessible legal talent, without the need to hire and train additional team members or provide internal resources, such as office space and computers. And because legal managed services providers handle these tasks on a daily basis, their staff attorneys are skilled, well-trained, and adept at handling a wide variety of cases and tasks. For in-house teams and clients, this expertise translates to lower expenses. For law firms, this allows them to focus on their strategic expertise while keeping the overall case budget within their clients’ budgets.
- Data transparency. Organizations using legal managed services remain in control of their document repositories. By utilizing dashboards, data filters, and other available tools, companies and law firms have better insight into their case information, allowing them to oversee the work of external legal managed service providers while improving their ability to assess and mitigate risk.
