When organizations began leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and automation tools to assist with legal processes such as document review, legal research, and contract/lease abstraction, some predicted that AI support would revolutionize the legal industry and make human attorneys obsolete. While technology will probably continue to advance in the coming years, it has not replaced attorneys, nor is it likely to do so any time soon.
Legal technology is helpful in many ways, but just like human attorneys and legal staff, AI and automation technologies have limitations. Rather than being a standalone solution for conducting legal research or performing document review tasks, AI is a mechanism that organizations can use to aid in the process. As attorneys work with machine learning technologies more, such technologies should theoretically become better “trained,” making them more useful as a cost- and time-saving tool. However, there are time and resource expenses associated with training on AI platforms.
Machine learning technologies need enough accurate data input to learn from at the time of set-up and then require continuous review of AI results to maintain quality data. But finding the resources to do this AI support training and maintenance can be a challenge for law firms and corporate legal departments. An outsourced team of trained attorneys can handle both the input of contracts, documents, and other materials into the system in order to train AI technologies, and ongoing review of results generated by AI for quality assurance. This combination of attorney teams and AI support lets organizations leverage their investment in legal technology and provides the support needed to make that technology truly valuable.
AI and automation tools can be invaluable in assisting in legal services processes as well as in conducting evaluations of the results obtained, but they are not a replacement for humans. Firms and corporate legal departments that can find ways to leverage AI support and automation technologies, combined with input and direction from attorneys trained to use AI support efficiently, will be well positioned to realize process and cost efficiencies.
